Biography

White ceramic work by Alana Wilson

Alana Wilson was born in Canberra, Australia, in 1989. A New Zealand national, she studied ceramics at the National Art School in Sydney and works primarily with ceramics. The textures and colors of her ceramics, reminiscent of vessels excavated from underwater ruins, are created through repeated experiments with glazing and firing. Drawing strong inspiration from ancient vessels, archaeological objects, the sea, and water, Wilson creates non-functional, ruin-like forms. Her work uses the long history of ceramic techniques—the traces left by people in ancient times and the flow of time extending into the present—as a metaphor, while also questioning the relationship between nature and humanity. She has exhibited primarily in Australia, as well as in the United States and Europe. Alongside sculptural works in ceramics, her practice includes drawing and video, pursuing consistent themes across different media.
