Biography

Painting of plants and a figure by Yuka Mori

Yuka Mori was born in Shiga Prefecture in 1991. She graduated from the Nihonga program at Kyoto City University of Arts in 2014, studied as an exchange student at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 2015, and completed a master’s program in Nihonga at Kyoto City University of Arts in 2016. Influenced by Buddhist art from an early age and with a background in Nihonga, Mori explores the boundary between the body and its environment through her own experiences and perceptions. Using the relationship between figure and ground in painting, she depicts the ways in which body and environment contain one another and remain in continual flux. Since 2019, she has made studies of plants, seeing them as beings continuous with their surroundings that move across boundaries with a sensory experience different from that of humans. Drawing inspiration from the physicality of plants, she also creates paintings that explore this perspective.
