Exhibition overview

GALLERY crossing (Minokamo, Gifu) will present “Intertwined — Playful Mesh” by Yuka Mori from July 12 (Sat.) to August 3 (Sat.), 2025. This will be Mori’s first solo exhibition at the gallery and will feature her latest paintings.

Imagine a sensation of crossing the boundary of one’s own skin, where body and environment melt together and the world becomes continuous with one’s inner self—a beauty born from empathy resembling deep relief and an awe of an invisible presence that seems to swallow the individual. Using Nihonga materials, Yuka Mori’s paintings depict the ambiguous nature and sensation of boundaries between people and plants, self and other, and substance and presence. While resonating with Buddhist thought and an Eastern sense of the body, they also incorporate motifs rooted in Western painting, forming a distinctive worldview that is neither fully Japanese nor Western. In recent years, Mori’s perspective on the “physicality of plants,” which she regards with admiration, and on their ecology has deepened. In a newly developing series, she depicts the invisible connections and their expansion, woven like a mesh through the intersections of plants, people, and everything that constitutes the world. The sincerity with which she engages the meeting of her own bodily perception and the world seems like an act of recovering the primal bodily sensations that people forget as they grow within contemporary life.

As a related event, a conversation between the artist and Toshiharu Suzuki (curator, Toyota Municipal Museum of Art) will be held from 16:00 on July 12 (Sat.).
